Paladino breaks three state meet records

State Meet Highlights

The West Virginia championships are held within eyesight of the capital building in Charleston, at 18,500-seat Laidley Field. The meet includes three classifications. And this year, it was all about senior Amelia Paladino of University leaving a statement with an historic triple.

Top Performances:

- Amelia Paladino already had West Virginia all-time records in the 3200 and 1600. At state, she added the 800 to her collection when she ran US#9 2:08.49. She broke the all-time state record by more than two seconds. She also won the other races in 4:51.74 and 10:25.29. Three races, three state championship meet records.

- Andrew Milliron of Jefferson won the 3A 1600 in 4:16.85 and the 3200 in 9:25.55.

- Mykera Days of Martinsburg won a sprint double in 3A, with 12.10 and 24.89. After winning both titles as a freshman, she was third in both as a sophomore and junior.

- Devyn Hosby of Washington finished second to Days in the 100 and 200 but also won the 400 in 57.43.

- Christian Buckley of Poca produced West Virginia's top throwing marks in Class 2A with 59-7.50 in the shot put and 174-4 in the discus.

- Evan Rhodes of Parkersburg won the 3A 300 hurdles in 37.98.

Top Teams:

The Parkersburg boys won the AAA title with 93 points, while runner-up Jefferson was second with 80. The girls from Hurricane won the team title with 80 points, easily surpassing second-place Washington's 56.5.

Top Competition: The back-and-forth between Days and Hosby wasn't defined by a weekend but by four years of going head to head, which made their races all the more compelling. Back in 2011, Days was the state champ in the 100 and 200. Last year, Hosby swept the 100-200-400 races. And this year, Days reclaimed her 100 and 200 titles, with Hosby second.

Record-breaker: Look out for Paladino in the post-season, because who knows what she can do once she finds some competition. Already this spring, she has run US#3 for 3200, US#12 for 1600, US#2 for the full mile (at Penn Relays) and US#9 for 800 (at the state meet). The 11th place finisher at Foot Locker has put together one of the all-time best season by any high school athlete from West Virginia.
