Larry Josh Edwards Exits West Virginia State Meet With Memorable Triple

In his final high school meet, Larry Josh Edwards made sure his impact was felt. The University High senior led his team to a Class AAA state title on Saturday, May 21 at the West Virginia Outdoor State High School Track and Field Championships held at UC Stadium at Laidley Field.

The University of Oregon-bound distance runner won the 3,200 meters (9:07.75), the 1,600 (4:13.30) and 800 (1:56.12) and ran on the third-place 4x400 relay to contribute 36 of his team's 93 points. Jefferson was runner-up with 88 points.

Edwards' triple wasn't the only one at the state meet. 

In the girls Class AAA, Morgantown won with 96 points as junior Irene Riggs ran a state meet record 3,200 time of 10:14.16. She also claimed the 1,600 (4:51.25) and 800 (2:14.86). 

Class AA

It was a Class AA sweep for the Winfield track program. The Winfield boys secured the team title with a runner-up finish in the 4x400 relay, the last event of the meet. Winfield scored 117 points to edge out Point Pleasant (111 points). 

Matt Scheneberg won the 3,200 (9:15.48), 1,600 (4:17.94) and 800 (1:57.24). 

In the field, Cody Schultz of Point Pleasant claimed the discus title with a throw of 179-4.

In girls AA, Winfield dominated with 145 points. Junior Rachel Withrow won the 3,200 and 1,600 and was third in the 800.

Class A

The Williamstown girls won the program's third straight Class A title, capturing gold in nine events to score 148 points. The Yellowjacksts won the 4x100, 4x200, 4x400 and 4x800 relay titles. 

Individually, Williamstown freshman Alyssa Sauro won the 3,200 (10:40.47), 1,600 (4:58.26) and 800 (2:17.42) titles. Her 800 time was a Class A meet record. She also was part of the winning 4x800.  

In boys Class A, Doddridge scored 86 points to win the team championship. 

Sophomore Aidan Scott of Wheeling Central Catholic pulled off the distance triple, winning the 3,200 (10:05.80), 1,600 (4:32.42) and 800 (2:03.36). 

Gus Morrison of Ritchie County claimed the long jump, (22-6.50), 300 hurdles (39.67) and 400 dash (51.06) titles.

Class AAA: University boys 93 points; Morgantown girls 96 points - RESULTS

Class AA: Winfield boys 117 points; Winfield girls 145 points - RESULTS

Class A: Doddridge County boys 86 points; Williamstown girls 148 points
